Heavy mobile phone use can cause brain tumour: Italian Supreme Court

Here’s one court ruling that will make you shift uncomfortably in your seat. The Supreme Court in Italy has ruled that mobile phones can cause brain tumour.

The Sun reports that after using his handset at work for almost 6 hours a day for 12 years, 60-year old Italian businessman Innocente Marcolini began experiencing head and chin pains. Soon after, he was diagnosed with brain tumour. Italy’s Supreme Court in Rome, reportedly has blamed Marcolini's phone for his ailment, citing a ‘causal link’ between the excessive phone usage and the growth. British scientists, however, have added that there isn't enough evidence to back this claim.

With this, another round of debate on the potential hazards of excessive use of mobile phones has been set rolling, the other one being cancer.

An obviously disturbed Marcolini said that people should be made aware of the risks. He was quoted as saying, “This is significant for very many people. I wanted this problem to become public because many people still do not know the risks. I was on the phone, usually the mobile, for at least five or six hours every day at work. I wanted it recognised that there was a link between my illness and the use of mobile and cordless phones."

According to the report, notable oncologist and professor of environmental mutagenesis Angelo Gino Levis has backed Marcolini's claims, along with neurosurgeon Dr Giuseppe Grasso.

Electromagnetic radiation from mobile and cordless phones could potentially damage cells, triggering tumours. Prof Levis was quoted as saying, “The court decision is extremely important. It finally officially recognises the link. It’ll open not a road but a motorway to legal actions by victims. We’re considering a class action. Tumours due to radiation may not appear for 15 years, so three to five-year studies don’t find them. We’ll only realise in years to come the damage phones can cause children.”

Elaborating upon Marcolini’s ailment, the report shares that the tumour was detected in the trigeminal nerve — near the spot where the phone touched his head. Although benign, the tumour was life threatening as it spread to the carotid artery, i.e., the major vessel carrying blood to his brain.

Closer home, mobile phone radiation has been a topic of longstanding worry. As part of a set of precautionary guidelines the government has issued for mobile users, it advised them to keep distance between the body and the phone, by either using the speakerphone option or headsets.

These guidelines are in line with an earlier mention. In December last year, the government had declared that hands-free, which till then may have been just another accessory bundled up with a mobile phone, would soon be made mandatory to be provided with all mobile phones. The reason was that using hands-free, as opposed to answering calls the usual way, is being seen as an effective way of steering clear of radiation emissions. Switching over to SMS or other non-voice modes of communication too is preferable for evading radiation.

How to make 3D glasses for Rs.10
There are tons of anaglyph 3D videos and images available on the Internet. Sadly though, you need equipment to watch all of this. Fear not now, as with household equipment, ten bucks and close to ten minutes of your time (depending on your craft skills), you can create the cheapest 3D glasses for your 3D viewing pleasure. Let’s quickly get started...

Step 1: Things you need:
  • Cardboard
  • Chart paper
  • Red Cellophane paper
  • Blue Cellophane paper
  • Cutter, Glue, Scissors

Step 2: Draw your own design that you would want to see in your 3D glasses. If you’re lazy and uninspired, cut out the sample design given in the image.

Step 3: Stick that design on to your cardboard and cut it out so that you have a sturdy frame.

Step 4: Ensure that the eyeholes and the area for the nose are properly cut. You don’t want your skin to get sore, or the cardboard to block your visibility.
Cut out the sides in a similar way.

Step 5: Cut out the red cellophane and blue cellophane paper and stick them on the front of the glasses. Be sure to remember that the red needs to go on the left and the blue needs to go on the right.

Step 6: Voila! Your 3D glasses are ready! All it took us was close to twenty minutes to get the whole experiment done. As you can see, our craft skills do leave a lot to be desired but hey, if you do manage to conjure something better, post it out here for the tech world to see!
Ready!
Ready!

For those of you'll who have already completed this short tutorial, check out this 3D content we’ve compiled from different sources off the Internet. Feast your eyes!

Duplicate yourself in a photograph

Here, we show you how to shoot and duplicate multiple images of yourself in a picture using a camera and a good image manipulation programme...
How to - Duplicate yourself in a photograph
Cameras are great fun to play around with and when combined with a good image manipulation programme, there are tonnes of tricks you can employ to add all sorts of effects to your photographs. Here, we'll show you how to shoot and duplicate many images yourself into a picture in about 10 minutes. Here’s a glimpse of what we’re trying to do.

We’re going to do this by clicking a sequence of photos without moving the camera so we’re able to use Photoshop or any image editing application to remove redundant parts of the images to create this illusion.

Step 1. Set up your scene
Choose a location for the sequence of photos to be shot first. It should ideally be a place where none of the objects or background move or change. For this trial, it’s important that all of these photos be shot in quick succession so none of the elements in the scene are very different. Any movement or change means that shadows or lighting conditions may change as well and the effect we want to achieve will be lost. For the sake of our trial, we asked Karan to be our subject. We wanted to replicate him four times.

Step 2. Setup the camera
The placement of the camera and its settings are important. The camera must ideally be set on a tripod or on a stationary, stable surface so it doesn’t move between different shots. A few settings must be tweaked for getting the right photo too. Ideally, set the camera to the Shutter speed priority. In our case, we adjusted the ISO settings to match our lighting conditions and we set the shutter speed of the camera to 1/30. This is, of course, if you’re shooting indoors. With a better lit setup or outdoors, you can further reduce the shutter speed. We’re being particular about the settings so that each image can look as identical as possible.

Step 3. Click the photos
With the camera in place, click the first photo without any subject in the scene. The next step is to ask the subject to stand in place and pose. Of course, remember that there are going to be a couple of shots of the subject, so try and avoid overlapping as much as possible. Once done, ask the subject to move to another place and click another photo. Do it some 3-4 times with the subject or object in different places, avoiding overlap as much as possible. Let your creativity go wild here and once you try this out, you’ll discover a tonne of things you can experiment with.

Step 4. Open the images in Photoshop (or any other image editor)

The next step is to copy the images on the PC and open them in Photoshop. You can also use any other image editor that supports layers and transparency support.
Loading layers, one after another

Now, open the first image that you shot (without any subjects in the view) and add the other photos you shot with other subjects in place as separate layers.

Step 5. Clear out the layers, one at a time

Using a soft, round eraser brush to clear layers

The next step is to use the eraser tool and clear out the background one layer after another, keeping only the subject visible. Do the same for other layers, taking care not to deform or erase parts of the subject in the image.

When you’re done with this, you’ll find that you’ve achieved the desired look and effect. Of course, you’re free to use effects and play around with the look and feel of the final product.
The result, at last!
The result, at last!

This is what we came up with. Once you've gotten used to this, you can try experimenting with more objects. With practice, it won't take more than a few minutes to come up with such creations. Don't forget to share your creative experiments with your friends

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg joining Google+

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg joining Google+ was a major media event, with everyone from Forbes to The Daily Mail covering the fact that the founder established a Google+ profile, building Circles that include former Facebooker Dustin Moskovitz and current Facebook CTO Bret Taylor.
While many were doubtful that the real Zuckerberg would join a competing social service, tech blogger Robert Scoble texted Zuckerberg himself to confirm, tweeting out “Name drop moment. Zuckerberg just texted me back. Says “Why are people so surprised that I’d have a Google account?”
In case anyone is still doubting that it is the real Zuck on there, Scoble tells me that Zuckerberg indeed meant Google+ account when he referred to Google account. But the real question is, why are people so surprised that Zuckerberg would chose to be on Google+?
Perhaps the answer lies in the precedent set by Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who seem to have shied away from interacting on Facebook as themselves. (According to Steven Levy, Brin is actually on Facebook as a pseudonym. Google Chairman Eric Schmidt is also rumored to be on the service, independently of when Mike impersonated him).
Page’s and Brin’s behavior aside, plenty of other founders (Myspace Tom for example) have shown that it’s perfectly normal to partake and enjoy competitive services, and that it shouldn’t necessarily be considered an act of espionage. I for one just hope Zuckerberg is more prolific on Google+ than he is on Twitter.
